Tips to Support Regulation

Regulation Tip #1: Use "Square Breathing" to slow down a racing nervous system!

How:

  • Have your child trace a square in the air or on a table: breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 4, and hold for 4.

Why:

The structured pauses during the breath cycle signal the brain to lower the heart rate and reduce stress hormones. This simple visual and physical routine makes deep breathing concrete and easy to practice during moments of tension.

Regulation Tip #2: Use the "Zones of Regulation" visual to identify emotional states!

How:

  • Categorize feelings into four color zones: Blue (sad/tired), Green (calm/focused), Yellow (frustrated/excited), and Red (angry/out of control).

  • Check in daily so your child can point to their zone and choose a pre-planned tool (like a stretch or a break) to help them get back to Green.

Why:

Naming the emotion without judgment reduces shame and helps children learn to actively manage their internal state.

Regulation Tip #3: Use "Temperature Shifts" to quickly interrupt a high-anxiety meltdown!

How:

  • Have your child splash cold water on their face, hold an ice cube, or place a cool, damp cloth on the back of their neck.

Why:

The sudden change in temperature triggers the mammalian dive reflex, which physiologically slows down the heart rate and calms the nervous system.

This physical "reset button" is highly effective when a child is too overwhelmed to use cognitive or verbal coping skills.
